The Shepherd's tomb is about allegory versus symbolism. There are eight letters on the top line which may represent the eight monuments at Shugborough. D....M refers to the Dark Lantern which refers to the cave in Plato's republic. Exposing the symbols to the light reveals only a symbol. When you sit around the light you cannot see beyond the light and thus only see the symbol. An unlit brazier signifies the message. Understand the monuments and you will understand the symbols. If you travel the world you learn moral lessons.
